Imagine that AI translation tools, like ChatGPT and DeepL, are rapidly transforming how people communicate and think, making more people wonder whether they are helpful tools supporting language acquisition or quietly replacing humans? These tools typically offer immediate translation without grammatical and spelling errors, allowing people to convey their messages more accurately and conveniently. Despite occasional nuances produced by AI translation tools, they also significantly help language learning by offering personalization and instant feedback to users.

One of the primary reasons is that AI can help people learn a language by personalizing their language learning path. AI translation tools can analyze content appropriate for every specific learners’ requirements and proficiency levels. This means beginners won’t be overwhelmed with highly difficult vocabulary, while both intermediate and advanced learners can learn words from more complex or higher-level materials. Froehlich and Plass indicated that the most significant opportunity for AI in education lies in its ability to generate personalization targets that align the learning environment with learners’ needs. In addition, I can take myself as an example. AI translation tools improve sentences with fewer grammatical errors and appropriate vocabulary usage if learners give them precise prompts and detailed content. What’s more, AI translation tools ensure the correct language structure of the sentences. For instance, proper placement of the subject, verb, and object, which is a fundamental part of the sentences, may also be a challenge while switching languages with different sentence structures. Personalization through AI tools transforms language acquisition into a more objective and customized learning process.

Furthermore, immediate feedback from the AI tools leads to significant support for studying a language. As Mike mentioned in Timekettle (2025), “Human translators can translate 2,000-3,000 words in a day, whereas AI can translate millions of words in the same amount of time.” This indicates directly how fast the AI can translate a conversation and words compared to human translators. Similarly, AI can give learners instant responses if they have questions related to every aspect, even pronunciation. Learners don’t need to take time waiting for the teachers’ replies but use AI translation tools at any time and anywhere. For example, if the speakers can hardly pronounce a word, they can utilize apps such as Chat GPT or Google Translate to help them learn the correct pronunciation in both American and British accents. Thus, instant responses from AI can result in enhancing the efficiency of language learning.

Despite those benefits, some may argue that nuances in translating languages might also occur in the AI translation tools. While it is true that most of the translating sentences from AI are completed without mistakes, there are still nuances and occasionally ambiguous content produced in the sentences from AI. Even though AI may misunderstand the word usage from different cultures, these mistakes can be reduced by providing clearer and more proper prompts for the AI translation tools. For example, learners can improve accuracy of sentences through adding more words to elaborate the sentences and shorten unnecessary phrases or words. Clearly, AI translation tools are powerful. They allow humans to think critically, as learners still need to evaluate and refine the sentences carefully. As a result, AI translation tools should be viewed as a supportive partner instead of fully adopted without critical judging during the language learning process.

Although AI translation tools may sometimes produce inaccuracies when translating between languages, it’s undeniable that they also offer functions such as personalization and instant feedback for language learners. It is crucial that learners use them wisely with critical thinking, recognizing which part should be learned, and which part should be discarded or simplified. Ultimately, AI translation tools bring a more diverse and more interesting method to language learning, enabling learners to take control of their own learning pace.
